Update from the weekend

Whew, it’s been a busy week and weekend. Let’s play some catch-up, shall we?

Friday I finished a lot of the cleaning and organizing I had been doing all week. I have one mesh laundry bag STUFFED full and an XL Ziploc Big Bag half over half full of yarn to get rid of. Tomorrow Amber will be coming by to get first crack at the yarn and then I know that Dani and Margarita will likely take the rest of it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday evening I finally succumbed to the siren call of the hook. I started another beret and worked slowly, taking many breaks, until John got home from the airport.

Saturday morning we got up and went to Lowe’s to get supplies to run the cable into my studio. That turned into an all day project with John up in the attic for most of the afternoon. Even though it was really nice out (around 70 or so) it got hot quick in the attic.

But we finally got it all hooked up and working. Now I just need to get a remote for the TV because the old one doesn’t quite work (half the numbers work, the volume works, and that’s about it).

We also met a new little friend. A little kitty (maybe 6 months old, no older than a year) came right to me when I called to her (she had been under a car across the street from us). She hung out for a while in the garage with John and I. We call her Dora because she kept exploring through the garage. She looked good for an outside cat, but no tags. We did feed her a bit of food and some water. John and I keep talking about it and this coming weekend if she’s still coming around then we will at least take her to the vet to see if she’s microchipped. Such a sweet kitty, though.

I finished the beret I started on Friday. No, no pics yet because I’m a loser and haven’t been taking pictures or getting the existing ones off the camera. John and I had a relaxing day before he had to leave for the airport. The nice thing is this will be the last week for this project. Which is really good because otherwise he’d be trying to fly into one of the busiest airports next week (he flies into Baltimore-Washington airport, which is going to be slammed next week for the Inauguration).

Today I got up and worked in the studio. The morning was spent updating my paperwork and spreadsheets to prepare for tax time. The good news is that after one full year of doing this, I’m operating in the black. Not by a lot, mind you. But I’ve made a profit. I still need to sit down and research my taxes, but right now it looks like I might have to pay (but not a lot). While I’ll still have the nice tax lady do my taxes, I like knowing what might be coming before I walk in.

I also worked on a design that I will be self-publishing this month. My goal is to get one self-published each month. I may have to raise my prices, though. After doing my books today I realized that when I first priced my patterns, I didn’t take into account the fees that PayPal takes out. So I might need to go up a bit. I’m going to work on that later this week. They’re not going to sky rocket. I just need to take into consideration the fees.

Work is done for the day, so I’m going to go make dinner. I might crochet tonight, but I haven’t decided. I’m still taking things easy, so I may not crochet. I should have pictures later this week. I’ll see what I can do. ๐Ÿ™‚

Have a great night, everyone! ๐Ÿ™‚

Productive business paperwork day

Taxes done and refund on its way! ๐Ÿ™‚ It cost me a bit to get the taxes done, but I’m pleased with this tax lady as she was very helpful in finding all kinds of deductions (even things I didn’t think of). I have people. ๐Ÿ˜‰ She also gave me a lot of good advice for this next year.

I used their advice and made a spreadsheet for keeping track of my expenses and income. I can happily say at this point that I’m in a profit state. Not by much, but there is a profit (I officially had a loss for ’07). So now in addition to keeping my receipts and check stubs, I’ll also have it all added automatically and subtracted and such. It’s cool. Can you tell I sometimes miss working as an assistant and doing paperwork? ๐Ÿ™‚

So, that stuff is done. I haven’t crocheted at all today. Oops. I need to remedy that. I’ve got a bit of a headache due to a horrid thunderstorm that’s rolling through here. Midnight needs to go out but I can’t take him since it’s raining. Oh well. Hopefully we’ll get a break here soon and I can run him outside.

Project updates

I’m going to try to do this every week, so I can see where I am realistically. It will be in a bit of code, so to all my readers, sorry. ๐Ÿ™‚ The numbers refer to the project numbers in my spreadsheet.

#107: I need to pull that one back out and finish it. Likely self-publish and so it should be quick and easy to finish.

#108: I need to make another one out of my notes. They’re difficult to read (should have typed it up right after I made it) so I need to redo. This would be why I now type the pattern as I go here on the laptop.

#109: I may go up a hook size on the 2nd prototype. Or I may just measure the first prototype, check the pattern, and go ahead and publish.

#110: This needs to be pulled out and figure out where the issue is on the pattern. The first prototype didn’t make me happy. So now it’s time to play with it and make it work.

#111: Long term project, but I need to get more yarn and figure out where I am on this. This could be VERY lucrative if it works like is in my head.

#112: While out tomorrow get an envelope for returning swatch to me and mail this out already!

#119: Need to hunt through the studio again and see what I did with the notes from this pattern. If I threw it out in a fit of stupidity I will be very very unhappy.

#124: This actually takes priority after #112. I need to finish tweaking this pattern and get it ready to go. It’s for a lesson I’m teaching so I need to get it going.

Yeah, I know, I skipped some numbers. Things go on the spreadsheet as I come up with ideas. So a lot of things are still in “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if I…” stage. The numbers above are things that are currently highlighted as “Pay attention and focus” items. I’d like to change those colors to published in the next 2 weeks.

I also need to figure out a purse for my niece. I wanted to come up with my own design for it, but I may just have to go with something prepublished to get it done in time. We’ll see.

That’s all from here. Tomorrow I’ll be out to get my taxes done. Here’s hoping for a good refund (I know I’m getting some back with just my old job’s W-2) so I can get some things taken care of. ๐Ÿ™‚

Class update

I had a total of 6 students last night. 2 were employees taking the class for free, but that means 4 paying students. And only one purchased on discount, so that means it’ll be a good check. ๐Ÿ™‚ That class tied with the class of 6 girls on largest class I’ve ever taught. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m starting to get my teaching flow down. I know now that I need to get through chaining by break time and then when we come back from break get them going on single crochet. I probably spend more time on chaining than anything else it seems, but to me, it’s the perfect time for them to figure out how to hold the yarn and hook and project all at once. Plus, you start everything with a chain, so it makes sense to know how to do that.

It’s a rainy drizzly day here. I need to go out and procure some essentials for the house, but I may do that later. The storms are small bands so I think I’ll wait until it passes.

My swatch for submission blocked beautifully. Now it’s time to get the proposal written, printed, and the whole thing assembled. I’m hoping to get it out by Monday.

I also need to schedule my meeting with the tax lady. I got all my stuff together yesterday (hello receipts!) and I have the referral sheet John gave me. I was also smart and made a folder for this year. And I already have in there the receipt for sending out SSP#1 and my check stub for the latest check from teaching.

Okay, I’m going to get some coffee and get a start to today.
