Just a quick update

Spinning has to wait until this weekend, though. Deadlines must take priority. Le sigh.

Long overdue post

Sorry about that, folks. I was doing so good with keeping up with the blog, and then life did what life does and threw me a curve ball.

Right, so this is a quick post because I need to get ready to head out the door in about twenty minutes (will be explained further down).

Thing the first: Due to aforementioned curve ball, I’m now residing with my parents. This may seem like a horrid thing, but it solves a couple of issues. One being that I can continue designing and teaching full time (which, if you follow any other designer, you know that this job really doesn’t pay a lot). It also allows me to be a great help to my family by being around to keep my dad company during the day and serve as a driver to get him where he needs to go.

Now, this also has other benefits. The first being I have a lot more time to design. So, expect to see a lot more coming out from me. I know I missed a March pattern release, but I will get it (and possibly a second pattern) released this month. The other benefit leads us to…

Thing the second: If you live in the Polk County, Florida area and would like to take crochet classes or workshops with me, then you need to go check out Four Purls Yarn Shop in Winter Haven. If you go to their site and check out the classes link, you will see a whole array of crochet classes and workshops that I’ll be offering there at the store. Laura is super crochet friendly, so I highly encourage everyone to go there!

Thing the third: The main reason I’m leaving in now 15 minutes? I’m going to pick up my first spinning wheel today!!! Yes, I’m highly excited about this. Although, I’m unsure as to when I’ll have time to get on the wheel this week (gotta love deadlines as they mean I’m going to get a check later). But, I’m very excited as this is something I’ve wanted for a while. I was able to secure a great deal on the wheel and just couldn’t turn it down. Pictures later once I get the lovely home. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thing the fourth: Registration for the Knit and Crochet Show (aka Chain Link) opens tomorrow. Remember, I’m teaching three classes, and I hope you not only can make it to Chain Link, but that you’ll take one (or all) of my classes. I’m nervous about class counts and all that, so if you’re interested in any of the topics (amigurumi, broomstick lace, and felting), please consider taking my class. We have a lot of fun when I teach. And in the amigurumi class, there might even be games of catch. ๐Ÿ™‚

Okay, time to finish getting ready and head out. I’m going to get back on track with posting here. I promise. ๐Ÿ™‚

Change of plans, but it’s for the best

This morning I got up, had a cup of coffee, got some stuff together, and headed out to the yarn shop. I had a lesson today! ๐Ÿ™‚ Deborah was a great student, eager to learn, and listened well! And she may take another class from me later after she finishes the doll blanket we started her on.

And now I’ll be taking care of sending the class schedule email to the newspaper in the area. Mainly because I type a lot faster and Debbie has enough on her plate right now…so I’m more than willing to pick that up for her. And now that I have permission to teach the sock pattern I want to, I’ll be adding that in there.

So I just got home and am about to eat lunch and then finally get started on the tree skirt work. Margarita gave me the last of the motifs last night (and there was much rejoicing) so now I need to hurry and get them put together and do the border.

I’m hoping to be done with it by this weekend (which may mean working on it on Sunday) and then I’m going to reward myself. John got me the Teach Yourself Visually Handspinning book last night. He says if I can get the hang of using the drop spindle, then he’ll build me a spinning wheel. Woot! ๐Ÿ™‚ ‘Cause I need another hobby. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But, that’s going to be my reward for getting my work done this week. I’m going to drag out the spindle I bought a while ago and try my hand at spinning some yarn.

Okay, off for now. Have a good day everyone!

Stepping Out…

I’m now technically without a mundane job (at least for a few weeks while I take a much needed vacation) so it’s now time to start behaving like a designer. I did create a new pattern on Saturday, so that was kinda cool. ๐Ÿ™‚ I need to finish the prototype and take good pics. The prototype is actually for a charity, but if I have enough yarn then I’ll make a second one to keep here as the prototype.

I received a gift card for JoAnn’s as a going away gift from one of my friends. I spent it already. ๐Ÿ™‚ Ordered some beads to make my stitch markers I want to make and sell and then got a 3 in 1 color tool for help with picking colors for designs. Then I got 4 of those new light up crochet hooks. ๐Ÿ™‚ What can I say? I’m a techgeek at heart and I love having the latest gadgets.

I also got a sketchpad from the same friend who gave me the gift card. I want to get a book on figure drawing. I want to be able to sketch how the design should lay. I can do that already, but need to do it on a figure. I may look through John’s books first before I go shopping.

Today’s plans include going to the store to get some Simply Soft yarn for a comfortghan we’re making, work with the new drop spindle to see if I can spin up some yarn, work on the scarf design and possibly knit a bit more. A lot to do, so I need to get moving.

Moving forward

As advised by Drew from The Crochet Dude fame, I have filled out my application to CGOA to become an Associate Professional and be assigned a mentor. And now I’m somewhat freaking out. Not sure why, it’s just a piece of paper, just a title change, but now it means that I’m really doing this.

I handed out some business cards today. Listened to the “good lucks” and “so excited for you” comments I’ve been getting all week. Spoke with the gal I’m gonna design a tunic for. Lots and lots of great ideas are finally coming in to my head. I think as this stress finishes lifting, I’ll be able to really focus on it.

I’m also going to research and send letters to the yarn companies (another suggestion from Drew) to find out about what they want from design submissions. I need to finish the prototype for the messenger bag. I think that will be a good one. And I need to work on the tank top idea I had.

I really want to go to the CGOA Fall conference. There are lot of great classes that I really need to take this year. But….at $70 per class and about 4-6 classes I really want to take….yeah. Not when I’m 2 days away from ending this mundane job and taking a paycut at another unknown mundane job. Oh well.

I started a basic stockinette blanket with the leftover Bernat Softee Baby yarn from my Project Linus crocheted blanket. Just wanted to try out the circs and get a little speed on the knitting. And I am. It’s not taking me as long to do a row now.

I’m thinking of assigning myself some homework. I have the two Harmony Guides. I’m thinking of forcing myself to swatch out the “non-basic” stitches to see what they drape like and such. I have a few in mind for garments. And it would be helpful to see what they actually look like in yarn/thread. I just have to figure out what to play with. I don’t want to use acrylic for them because that’s not going to drape like a lot cotton. Maybe I’ll use size 3 fashion thread. It’s easy to find and I have some in my stash.

Projects currently going (just for S&G):
1. 2nd sock (hoping to finish or get really close tonight at TBC meeting)
2. Project Linus knitted blanket
3. Threads of Compassion knitted scarf
4. Blue and khaki big granny for living room (this is my “not in the mood to concentrate on anything” pattern)
5. Attempt at lace knitting (may need to be redone and started over now that I’ve got it figured out).

I also have a few projects that went on serious back burner (one being a sweater…sorry, too hot now). And I have my spinning kit. I really want to do that. Maybe this weekend once I’m done with the job. I think I get it now. ๐Ÿ™‚ But I need some time where I’m not bothered and won’t be interrupted. And I need to sit in my studio and not include cat hair with it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Okay, I feel better now about where I am. I think I’m doing good moving forward in this. I think I’m going to put together my order form thing for the lady who wants a baby blanket made. We’ll see what happens.
