Happy National Crochet Month (belated)!

Sorry this is delayed. National Crochet Month began March 1st. I had all these great ideas in my head of things I was going to do this year for NatCroMo.

And then?

Then medical issues got in the way. A quick overview (because I try not to discuss things other than crochet here) is that I got a kidney stone, was given a painkiller to deal with it, had a horrible reaction to the painkiller, and then due to the lack of sleep and the reaction to the medicine, sent myself into a minor flare with the fibromyalgia. I haven’t crocheted for a week.

I’m almost better now. The stones seem to have passed and now I’m back on the climb to get better. I’m not having the flare issues right now, just dealing with getting energy levels back to where cleaning the kitchen doesn’t wipe me out for three hours.

Anyway, on to other things….

Voting has ended for the 2009 Crochet Awards. Now begins the wait. Winners will be announced live on MaryBeth Temple’s Getting Loopy radio show (which can be found here) on Monday, March 16th at 9pm. It’s a great show to listen to anyway, but that night should be great. From what I hear, they’re trying to get all the winners to call in to accept their awards. There’s also a chat room for the show and that always gets lively. If you can’t listen live, you can download the show later from the website or from iTunes.

I have two large swatches that I need to finish to get out the door along with proposals. That will have to wait a bit longer, unfortunately, because along with an energy drop the fibromyalgia causes a bit of mind “fogginess” that makes it difficult to concentrate on writing. Really, this blog post is taking me a lot longer than normal. So I’m hoping I can get it done in time to get it out the door. If not, I may put them in the queue to self publish.

I’m not sure what’s on the slate for today. I’ve been instructed not to push and not to work on really anything. John is tentatively scheduled to head out to California next week so I need to be able to take care of myself while he’s gone. We had a good start today as I took the dog out for the first time in a few days. So, I’m getting there.

Designing, Illnesses, Competitions, etc

Ah, the joys of designing. The first part of the project I’m working on for a call is fine. It’s done, it looks good, I’m excited about it. Today I was working on the finishing bit (this would be so much easier to just show you, but nope) and after working for about 2 hours on it I realized it wouldn’t work. So I ripped it back. Now I’ve got another direction and I think it’ll be even better. For the most part that’s how my day has been spent.

Well, in between coughing fits. I hate coughing. I am feeling better, though, so I guess that’s a good thing. I also went around the house and started spraying Lysol. John comes home tomorrow and I really don’t want to get him sick. Tomorrow I’ll wash the sheets, spray down the bedroom and bathroom, and vacuum.

The Florida State Fair is coming. I always forget about the deadline for entering into the competition until it’s too late. This year I remembered. And now my entry form is filled out (only 3 items this year…I’m trying to decide on a possible 4th) and ready to mail out. Then I’ll go in a few weeks and drop off my items.

John told me last night that the camera he got me is purple! ๐Ÿ™‚ Yay! It’s tiny, though. He said it’s definitely a “chick” camera because it’s too tiny for his big “man hands” (his words, not mine). He’s already charged it for me so it’ll be ready to go on Saturday when we go to Disney with the family.

Okay, that’s all from me. I’m going to go get back to work and see if I can finish this today.

Back to work and feeling human-like

The cold is still hanging on. Although I slept through the night last night and really am feeling a bit better. But this congestion stuff has got to go. Thankfully I found my vaporizer in the closet (I thought I had gotten rid of it). It’s not producing A LOT of steam, but at least what it is producing is making it into the family room (whereas the pot boiling on the stove was really only putting moisture into the kitchen). I’d like to find a spot here in the family room to put it, but there just isn’t anywhere that meets all the following criteria: 1) up away from the animals, 2) not blowing hot steam directly on me, 3) not blowing hot steam near any electronics. Therefore, it shall sit in the breakfast nook next to the family room.

I’ve also started working again. I’m working on a design idea for a call that went out. I have a few days to get that done. Although, minor rant about designing. I HATE when I get going on a project idea and then come up with another way to do it. Usually I rip out and start on the way I think will work better. Although sometimes I find that the new way doesn’t work and I end up having to redo in the original way. Ugh. So this time I’m working through it in the first way. If it doesn’t work, then I’ll try my other idea.

I’m skipping crochet meeting tonight. While I’m feeling a little bit better, I don’t feel well enough to go out in the cold and be around other people. I’m hoping that as each day goes by I can get better so that by Saturday I’ll be well. We’re going to Epcot for the Candlelight Processional and having dinner at Mexico. Yum. I want to be able to taste the food (and not just textures which is all I’m doing right now). I’ll take pics while there because I’ll have a new camera. ๐Ÿ™‚

John called last night to ask my opinion on my Christmas gift. Yes, it’s early. He knows what I’m making him (had to measure and let him pick the pattern and the colors) and he said since my camera is slowly dying (and taking batteries with it apparently) he wants to get me a new one. So he bought it last night. It’s a Nikon and is red. ๐Ÿ™‚ And it has a HUGE screen on the back (well, compared to my itty bitty 1″ screen on the Kodak Easy Share). I can’t wait to get it and be able to take more than 5 pictures without having to stop and charge. ๐Ÿ™‚ Very exciting.

That’s all from here. Moving day to day to feeling more human. I’m at likely 60% right now. Hopefully today I can get some work done on this new design idea and then on Thursday start back on SSP#4.

Fighting through

I apparently brought home two souvenirs from the trip. A combo of the stomach flu and a head cold. Yay.

The stomach flu seems to be gone for the most part. I have no appetite, but I’m finally able to keep saltines in my stomach. If I have the energy later I may go out and get some wonton soup. Or I may just eat more saltines.

The head cold part needs to die, though. I’m achy, my sinuses are on fire, and I can’t quit sneezing.

Today has been a total wash. Tomorrow may be as well, but we’ll see. I have a crochet meeting Wednesday that at this point may be skipped and a family dinner at Disney on Saturday. I must be better by then.

So yeah, happy holidays. ๐Ÿ™ This is why I hate traveling.

Quick recap from the weekend

John arrived home from work around 11:30 Friday night. I love direct flights! Here’s hoping they can keep him on those the whole time. ๐Ÿ™‚

Saturday we got up and drank coffee and listened our favorite shows on NPR: Car Talk and Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me. Then we headed out and had a light lunch before doing some shopping. We needed to get a new scanner and decided on an all in one. Stopped first at Circuit City and didn’t find anything we liked. So we headed over to CompUSA and found one for a good deal. We also picked up a new laptop backpack for John. He says it’s so much better! Which is good. His other one is for a smaller laptop (like mine) and was a tight fit for everything he needed to carry with him each trip. We then swung through and did some grocery shopping before heading back here.

After a while we got ready and headed out for my early birthday dinner. We went to Joia, this great place down the road that serves incredible martinis. ๐Ÿ™‚ The atmosphere is so cool and the food is awesome. We had a great dinner and then headed home. At home we watched a bit of TV before breaking out Rock Band 2 and playing a bit. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sunday was another lazy day. I wasn’t feeling great (been fighting off a bug) so we didn’t do a lot. We went to lunch at Panera so I could get soup and then came back home so John could do laundry and then pack again. He headed out around 4pm for the airport.

Sunday night I got back to work and finished the yarn company projects and packaged them to go. Monday morning I got up and ran it to the post office and then sent off the patterns.

The rest of Monday was a wash. ๐Ÿ™ I was feeling really down and out from the cold so I went to the store and got OJ and other things and just rested. I went to bed early hoping to knock it out. Before bed I started on one of the holiday socks so I would have something to work on while standing in line today to vote.

Today I got up feeling human again. So after feeding the animals I grabbed my ID and my sock bag and headed to the polls. Wow. So many people! And we have early voting in our county! I stood in line for about 45 minutes before getting in to vote. Once that was done I headed back here and got to work.

I’ll be swamped this week again (probably because I keep taking on projects) but the money will be good next month, so that’s always a bonus. I may or may not take tomorrow off for my birthday. Since I took yesterday off as a sick day, I’m behind a bit on my work. I may just work late today while watching the poll results come in and then work a bit in the morning. We’ll see.

Oh, and before I go, this is what John brought home for me this weekend. It’s one of those webkinz things. But he got it because it was a sheep! ๐Ÿ™‚

Isn’t it cute? ๐Ÿ™‚ I love it. I just have to keep it away from the dog who looked at it like it’s a new squishy for him. Speaking of the dog, I really hope he gets with the program soon about the time change. Right now he’s standing there barking at me (something he rarely does) because he’s convinced it’s time to eat. Ugh. This coupled with the barking in the morning when he thinks I need to get up to take him out is REALLY getting old.

Okay, back to work. Happy Tuesday, y’all!

Busy week already

Yesterday’s lesson went well. She’s taking another lesson from me next week. I’m not sure how many will be needed…that’s up to her. I want her to be comfortable and able to complete the project she wants to complete.

We had a bit of a scare last night. I was already tired from working at the shop (we’re getting all the yarns written down and Friday I’ll be there all day doing photos for the website). I was carrying dishes back to the kitchen and had to walk over the sleeping dog. Normally, this is never an issue. He just lays there, maybe lifts his head, but mostly just lays there. Not last night. He decided last night that it was a perfect time to try to stand up. While I was mid step. I didn’t fall, I didn’t drop the dishes, but I did land hard on my back leg in trying to stay upright.

Well, my left hip is my bad one due to an injury in high school and that flared up. Within 5 minutes my leg was getting tingly and hurting. So I stopped what I was doing, stretched my hip back into place (it’s what the physical therapist told me to do back then) and then promptly went to bed to keep weight off of it.

Today I’m better, just stiff and sore all over from the shock of how hard I stepped (gotta love Fibromyalgia…the littlest things cause the biggest pain sometimes). But I was able to finally get the website info updated (it’s not updated on the site, gotta wait on my webmaster to get home from work so he can load it), get a submission ready to go tomorrow, and got over half the inventory entered into the computer.

Tomorrow will be another low-key day except for a quick trip to the post office and bank. Then it will be back here to finish the inventory info before heading out for a full day at the shop on Friday.

New things to look for on the website (later tonight, not now): the latest patterns are up and the best thing to me is I finally got a calendar on there. Now you can see when I have things scheduled. The only things on there are lessons that are actually scheduled, not lesson openings. I also only have the typical workday stuff on there. So no household stuff will be listed, but I will list when I’m at meetings and such that the public is invited to. I’ll also block out days when I plan on doing office work or design work. ๐Ÿ™‚

Okay, John just got home so my workday is over. Have a good day!

How crochet can heal

So I’m feeling a lot better. Most of the weekend was a blur and I really don’t have much to report other than a lot of sleeping. Honestly, it’s the best thing for me when I’m having a flare. My body demands rest and it will get it one way or another. I much rather prefer laying down and not doing anything than falling over or running into something because I tried to keep going. And yeah, when I’ve pushed I’ve walked into walls and door frames. It’s not pretty.

Monday, John stayed home from work to help me out. Thankfully I wasn’t hurting anymore, just still really tired. But, he got up to do the morning feeding time with the animals and took care of taking Midnight out. By the mid-day walk I was able to go and walk with him and it felt good. He even caved to my craving for fried chicken and ran out to Publix to get some. Granted, it was his fault since he brought it up first and it sounded good to me.

I also got back to crocheting a bit yesterday. I was starting to get restless and needed to work on something. However, the little bit I did wore me out and I ended up taking a nap after. CGOA is doing a CAL (crochet-a-long) for the Floral Cami. So I started that. See?

Today I was given strict instructions not to push and to still take it easy. So I decided to see if I could crochet longer today. I got started on the Mystery Lace Shawl CAL on Ravelry. Here’s the pic of clue #1. It’s rows 1-16 and I’m pleased I was able to get it done in a few hours. I’m really thrilled with this pattern and it will become my “special event” shawl.

Here’s a pic of the Broomstick Lace wrap draped over the chair. Hopefully this weekend I can get some good pics with me wearing it outside.

And finally, the baby dress sample done. Well, pre-blocking. That’s today’s work so I can drop it off tomorrow.

Well, that’s it from here. I need to go eat lunch and prepare to block the baby dress. Thanks to all who kept me in your thoughts over the weekend. It was greatly appreciated. ๐Ÿ™‚

Might be gone for a bit

I know I haven’t posted since Wednesday. Things got busy the last few days of the week and I just didn’t get a chance to get on here to update.

I am really not going to post long today and may not be posting tomorrow.

I haven’t crocheted all weekend. Why?

Well, I’m having some issues with my fibromyalgia. I debated all day whether to mention this here, since I do try to keep my blog set on my professional pursuits. However, this is one of the reasons I left my very stressful job to become a full time designer and teacher. And this is also where a lot of my family and friends keep up with how I’m doing.

Anyway, no, I don’t know what triggered this mini-flare. If I did, it would make it easier. This one hit out of left field and I have been just doing what I need to do to get better: sleeping when I need to sleep (which is a lot off and on all day), drinking lots of water, and giving my hands a break.

I’ll be okay, I always am, it just takes a couple of days to get over it. One of the nice things about working for myself is that my boss lets me take as much time as I need to in order to get better. And yes, Mom, I’ll be okay. This is normal and there’s nothing a doctor would tell me to do than what I’m already doing (resting, taking anti-inflammatory meds, and drinking lots of water).

So we’ll get back to crochet content as soon as I’m picking up a hook again. Hopefully tomorrow, but we’ll see.

Need a swift kick of motivation and energy

It was a rough weekend healthwise, which is likely why I’m having such a hard time going today. It’s nice and chilly and I have the window open.

But, I’m having a hard time wanting to do anything. I have things I need to do and I even have stuff I want to do, but nothing so far. I have a mild migraine brewing (yuck) and I’m still dropping things.

For those who don’t know, dropping things is one of my issues with the fibromyalgia. It’s not fun and it makes me nervous ’cause it’s very easy to drop something that’s kinda important or dangerous. Thus why I recently quit using glasses to drink water and now fill a Naglene bottle.

Anyway, I need to get at least some progress on SSP#1 and then maybe I’ll sketch out some designs or something. I need to feel like I’m getting something done today. I’m going to be too close to deadlines soon if I don’t get a move on.

Okay, off to find something for lunch and maybe break down and take some meds (which unfortunately don’t help me on the working front).
